Transmission Slipping: Symptoms, Root Causes, Diagnosis, and Repair Cost Guide
What Transmission Slipping Feels Like
Transmission slipping is when the engine revs increase without a proportional increase in vehicle speed — the engine races but the car does not accelerate as expected. You may also experience delayed engagement when shifting from park to drive, sudden RPM spikes during acceleration, rough or hesitant gear changes, or the transmission unexpectedly dropping out of gear and revving freely. These symptoms can be intermittent early on and become consistent as the problem worsens.
Causes and Repair Cost
Low or burnt transmission fluid is the first thing to check — dark brown fluid with a burnt smell indicates the fluid is degraded and no longer providing proper lubrication or hydraulic pressure. Low fluid from a leak causes pressure drop and slipping. Worn clutch packs inside the automatic transmission lose the ability to hold gear engagement. A faulty transmission solenoid fails to apply or release clutches correctly. Torque converter lockup clutch failure causes slipping specifically at highway speeds. Transmission fluid service costs $40 to $80 DIY, $150 to $350 shop. Solenoid replacement: $30 to $150 DIY, $200 to $450 shop. Transmission rebuild: $1,800 to $4,500 shop.
